Introduction:
Navigating the complex world of child sports training involves more than just teaching the right techniques; it’s about nurturing an environment where young learners can thrive emotionally and physically. Our recent experience at Snowplanet with coach Juliette highlighted both the challenges and the vital importance of supportive communication in children’s sports education. The Incident:
During our regular visit to Snowplanet, an interaction between my son, Jayden, and coach Juliette not only tested our resolve but also provided us with significant insights. Jayden, who is six years old and still mastering the nuances of skiing, inadvertently engaged in behaviour that wasn’t suitable for the setting—tapping his ski poles against the platter lift, a behaviour commonly observed among many young children his age.The response from the coach was unexpectedly severe. Her loud and public reprimand led to Jayden feeling frightened and visibly shaken. This behaviour only escalated Jayden's fear, leaving him deeply frightened and visibly shaking—a reaction that was distressing to witness and has had a lasting effect on him.
When we attempted to resolve the matter amicably, multiple attempts to discuss the situation were unfortunately overlooked by the coach, who did not stop to address our concerns and seemed to intentionally ignore us as she passed by the cafe area where we were stopped, which felt very unprofessional.
My goal was simple: Why not have Jayden and Juliette each enjoy a slice of pizza together at the cafe? This simple act aims to create a positive experience, fostering an environment where they can coexist peacefully without viewing each other as threats. The goal wasn’t for them to become best friends, but to encourage a more comfortable and cooperative atmosphere.
Reflecting on Coaching:
This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the influence coaches have on young learners. Effective coaching extends beyond mere instruction—it’s about inspiring confidence and handling sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism. When young children are involved, the approach needs to be even more considerate, as their perception of authority figures is still developing. We also came across a quote that resonates deeply with our current situation: “Talent might make you good, but it’s your attitude and work ethic that will make you great.” —Alistair McCann. This highlights an essential aspect of what we believe all coaches at Snowplanet should embody. While talent in sports coaching is valuable, the attitude and work ethic toward learners, especially children, play a crucial role in their development and overall experience. This mindset should guide how coaches interact with their students, ensuring that every interaction contributes positively to their growth and love for the sport.
Lessons Learned:
- Communication is Key: The importance of open and constructive communication between parents, children, and coaches cannot be overstated. It helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that all parties are aligned in their objectives.
- Supportive Environment: Sports facilities must foster an environment where children feel safe and supported, not just physically but also emotionally.
- Empathy in Coaching: Coaches play a critical role in shaping a child’s sports experience. Their approach can either encourage a child’s love for the sport or deter them from pursuing it further. It is crucial for parents to seek coaches who not only possess the right skills but also demonstrate empathy and professionalism.
