Hi Andy I have 90,000 photos on my iPhone taking up 64gb of storage that needs to be moved off my phone.
Google photos is asking to clear them off but I’m so scared to push delete! I want to make sure they’re backed up to both iCloud and google photos as I use both. Is this even possible? Thanks so much in advance

Hi @Danielle,

If you have an iPhone, I'd suggest going with the iCloud plan.
iCloud can help you manage and optimises the storage on your phone automatically.
You wouldn't need to worry about your device storage space and, all of your photos will be available on both the cloud as well as your iPhone.
When you have subscribed with iCloud, go to your Settings -> Tap on your name (Apple ID) -> then tap on iCloud and make sure you have the following settings ticked:
F7696833-762E-474F-B534-7EDB132E2F81.jpeg C61CDB42-51AB-4B85-BB92-6AB8E0D1C37D.jpeg
Depending on your preference, you might want to copy my settings too, just make sure your settings are the same with mine.

The main thing here is to make sure that Photos sync is ON, as well as Optimise iPhone Storage is ticked, and it will start to reconsolidate your photos.

Your Google Photos should be reconsolidated too as soon as the iCloud finish its job, for your information, in iOS (i.e. iPhone & iPad) iCloud does the job automatically and seamlessly, while Google Photos needs a manual user intervention (i.e. to sync, etc)

Feel free to reply or post more if you have other questions.

Cheers 🍻

Thanks so much Andy! So would u suggest stop using google? I’m fine with that but how do I know if there are photos in google that aren’t in iCloud?

Did you previously have your photos uploaded to Google Photos before you have your iPhone? If so, we'd need to import the photos on Google Photos to your iPhone first, and then use iCloud as the sole provider.

I don't find much benefit from having 2 cloud providers, using iCloud is sufficient.

Hmmm I think you and I moved those once. Not sure but yes using one provider will be better

Hi @Danielle,

Thanks for popping into our office today and it was great to see you again 😃

To sum things up:
  1. Google Photos had a syncing issue with the iCloud, we removed Google Photos, and the syncing issue appears resolved;
  2. As you have an active iCloud subscription with Optimise iPhone Storage option enabled, your iPhone storage will be self-managed;
  3. To let iCloud automatically back up your device each day, here's what you need to do:
    • Connect your device to a power source;
    • Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network;
    • Make sure that your device's screen is locked.
Let us know if you need further assistance.
Have a good evening! 🌃
